Early Treatment: Is My Child a Candidate?
When early treatment is recommended, it is because acting now will produce a better long-term result than waiting, whether that means guiding jaw development, creating space for incoming teeth, or addressing a bite issue that will only become more complex with time.
At your child's consultation, we take a low-dose orthodontic x-ray to assess dental alignment and airway health. If airway measurements are within average range, your child may be a candidate for Invisalign-only expansion, a gentle and highly effective approach to correcting bite concerns and crowding without metal hardware.
Why Marin Ortho for Children's Invisalign?
The doctors at Marin Ortho were among just 54 orthodontic offices worldwide invited to help develop the clinical protocol for using Invisalign clear aligners for expansion in young children. That experience is built into every treatment plan we create. Most of our Phase 1 Invisalign patients complete treatment in about 6 months, thanks to the innovative protocols our doctors helped pioneer.
How Invisalign Works for Children
Invisalign clear aligners are custom-made trays that gently guide teeth into their ideal positions over time. For children ages 7 through 10, they serve as a modern, comfortable alternative to both upper and lower expanders and traditional braces. Each set of trays is worn for about a week before progressing to the next, moving teeth with gentle, precise force.
Because the full treatment plan is designed digitally before the first aligner is ever worn, we know exactly where your child’s teeth are headed from day one. Fewer adjustments are needed, which means fewer trips to the office and a more predictable experience from start to finish.
One important note: children treated in Phase 1 with Invisalign will still plan on a Phase 2 course of treatment with Invisalign Teen or braces once all permanent teeth have come in, typically around age 12 to 13. Phase 1 lays the foundation. Phase 2 finishes the smile.
- Easier to clean teeth and aligners, supporting better oral hygiene throughout treatment · Teeth move with lighter, more comfortable force
- Each tooth can be moved individually and precisely
- Aligners protect teeth from injury during sports and physical activity
- Greater day-to-day comfort and free of brackets, wires, or sharp edges
- Fewer office visits and zero emergency appointments for broken hardware
- If an aligner is misplaced, simply move on to the next one
- Can be used alongside a palatal expander when airway expansion is also needed
- Switching to metal braces is free of charge in the rare case it becomes necessary
What About Traditional Expanders?
We understand that some families have concerns about traditional expansion. Conventional metal expanders use adhesive that some children find unpleasant, and older retainer-style expanders can feel bulky on the roof of the mouth, temporarily affecting speech and swallowing. With Invisalign, those trade-offs are largely eliminated. The aligners are smooth, comfortable, and easy to manage, giving young patients a better day-to-day experience while achieving the same clinical goals.
